Professions in Transformation –Kolkata’s Rickshaw Drivers

Two feet, two hands and a small bell – belonging to skinny men, earning a living by manoeuvring a rickshaw through busy and crowded streets. Kolkata’s hand-pulled rickshaw ‘drivers’.

Seemingly tireless these drivers are getting school children, tourists, shopping bags and Kolkata ladies to the ordered destination by ploughing through narrow lanes, squeezing through between yellow cabs, trucks, trams, completely overloaded ‘cargo’ bicycles, cars and pedestrians. Even though plans are existing to ban the hand-pulled rickshaws from Kolkata’s streets completely, they are still a common feature of this 15 million city – for how long?
