Inside-Out

While in many cultures a house and its facade serve as a shelter and prevent any view into the sacred private life inside the walls, some housing facades rather become a canvas of their inhabitants’ life.

In neighborhoods in the small Indian cities of Solapur (Maharashtra) and Vijayapura (Karnataka) facades become the extension of the inner space – inside turned outside. All kinds of fabrics and things are placed outside – saris, shirts, trousers, shoes. While in most cases this might be due to a lack of space inside, it also gives a small idea about the inhabitants behind the facade.
